Eagle

Did you know that Eagles are the largest bird on the planet? The most common in the United States is the Bald Eagle.  An Eagle is capable of flying up to 15,000 feet in the air! Eagles are carnivores and eat mostly rodents and fish. In the wild, an Eagle can live to be 20 years old but can live to be 50 in captivity. 

Earthworm

Stand on your lawn, and under your feet are hundreds of thousands of earthworms! In the world, there are over 2,500 species of different earthworms. Earthworms are very important, and help plants grow healthy and strong. When an Earthworm digs, it brings fresh soil to the surface and they produce nitrogen which is an important nutrient for plants. If an Eathworm loses part of its body, it can regenerate it. 

Earwig

Earwigs are also called pincher bugs but despite their name, Earwigs do not have ears at all! Earwigs got their name because people used to think that they would crawl into your ears at night to lay their eggs. Even though Earwigs have pinchers, they are not harmful to humans. Their pinch is hardly noticed and does not break the skin. Earwigs actually don’t like being in your house, they prefer damp and cold environments. If you see one, put it outside where it likes to be.

Eastern Bluebird

Eastern Bluebirds are native to the Easter portion of North America and Canada but can be found as far south as Nicaragua. Eastern Bluebirds have blue back feathers but their chests are brown and white. Eastern Bluebirds prefer to eat insects, but during the winter months will eat seeds and fruit. Female Eastern Bluebirds are not actually blue, they are grey, while the male Eastern Bluebirds are bright blue. 

Eastern Chipmunk

The Eastern chipmunk is recognizable by the 5 stripes it has going down its back. The Eastern Chipmunk lives on the Eastern coast of Canada and the United States. Eastern Chipmunks prefer to live in wooded areas but are adaptable to almost all climates. They do like a good swim!

Eastern Cottontail

Eastern Cottontail Rabbits can be found all over the Eastern portions of North and South America. They are very common on the plains of the American Midwest. Eastern Cottontails are highly camouflaged by their brown color. Did you know that baby bunnies are actually called Kits, which is short for Kittens? Eastern cottontails only eat plants but enjoy grass the most.

Eel

There are over 800 species of Eels, each with unique characteristics. The Moray Eel is the only species that can be found all over the world. Eels have fins and gills just like fish, so they are unable to live out of water. Eels have the capability to swim backward using their fins! Electric eels are not eels at all, and no eel has the ability to produce electricity. It is hard to study eels since they are nocturnal and burrow into small spaces between rocks. 

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake

Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnakes are native to the Southwest portion of the United States, mainly from Florida to Louisiana. The average adult Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake can grow up to 8 feet long and 10 pounds! Rattlesnakes have a rattle on the end of their tail that they use to alert predators of their presence and to keep away. The rattle actually grows each time they shed, so the larger the rattle the older the snake.

Eastern Gray Squirrel

Even though their name is the Eastern Gray Squirrel, a large portion of the population live in Washington state! They were introduced there and are considered an invasive species. Eastern Gray Squirrels prefer wooded areas because they love to travel through the trees. Eastern Gray Squirrels can live to be 15 years old out in the wild.

Elk

Despite their common physical characteristics, Elk and Moose are completely different. Moose are larger than Elk. Elk are really loud! They use a call that is louder than a screaming child. Elk regurgitate their food like cows, they eat it, throw it up, and then eat it again. This is called Cud, and it is the same process as cows. Elk prefer the cold so they are mostly active from Fall to Spring. Even though a full-grown elk can weigh 1000 pounds, they can run up to 40 miles per hour!

English Cocker Spaniel

English Cocker Spaniels are known for their long ears, that resemble long hair. They are usually golden in color, but can also be black and white. The dog Lady in the movie “Lady and the Tramp” is an English Cocker Spaniel. English Cocker Spaniels are relatively small and only grow to be 28 pounds. English Cocker Spaniels are very loyal to their owners and love to cuddle. 

English Cream Golden Retriever

English Cream Golden Retrievers are also called Platinum Golden Retrievers since they are more white/ silver in color.  English Cream Golden Retrievers are wonderful family dogs and love to be around children. They are highly intelligent and learn very quickly. English Cream Golden Retrievers are active but do enjoy a calm cuddle. English Cream Golden Retrievers are excellent swimmers and love to go in the pool or a lake.

Eagle Ray

The Eagle Ray is not a solid color, but has polka dots! Eagle rays live in the warmer oceans around the world. Eagle Ray’s grow up to 11 feet long, which is slightly shorter than the Manta Ray.  The tails of the Eagle Ray have a poisonous barb on the end that they use to sting predators. When close to the ocean surface, the Eagle Ray can jump out of the water and looks like it is flying. Their favorite meals are oysters, clams, and shrimp.

Egret

The Egret can be spotted throughout North and South America. They prefer to live in wetlands and eat the fish and small animals that live there. Egrets have extremely powerful wings and with two flaps they can reach up to 25 miles per hour.

Egyptian Cobra (Egyptian Asp)

Egyptian cobras are native to North Africa and are the most venomous snake in that region. Egyptian Cobras are nocturnal but do occasionally enjoy sunning themselves in the early morning sun. They eat small rodents and the occasional domestic chicken. Egyptian cobras prefer to live around water. 

Egyptian Mongoose

The Egyptian Mongoose has long fur and short legs, this provides them the ability to look like a snake from far away. They walk very smoothly, so smoothly that it looks like it is gliding. The Egyptian Mongoose lives in Africa and parts of Asia, and prefers to live near a water source. The Egyptian Mongoose is a carnivore and enjoys eating snakes, birds, and small reptiles. 

Electric Eel

Electric eels are not actually part of the eel family, they are actually part of the knife fish family. They look similar to the eel but do not have a dorsal fin. The Electric Eel is capable of releasing 650 volts from its body. It uses this powerful charge to stun its prey and scare off predators. The Electric Eel resides in the waters of the Amazon River, and can grow up to 8 feet long!

Elephant

There are actually three different types of elephants: African Bush Elephants, African Forest Elephants, and Asian Elephants. An easy way to tell the difference between African and Asian Elephants is by the shape of their ears and the end of their trunk; African Elephant’s ears resemble the African continent and has two “fingers” at the end of their trunks, while Asian Elephants only have one “finger”. At 13 feet tall, African Elephants are the largest land mammals in the world. An elephant is not fully grown until they reach the age of 35 years old, and lives to be 70 years old. 

Emperor Tamarin

The Emperor Tamarin monkey looks very distinguished with its long mustache of white and its tail of bright orange. Emperor Tamarins live in groups of up to 15 other monkeys. Emperor tamarins can be found in the tropical forests of South America. Emperor tamarins are very small and only weigh around 1 pound, this allows them to climb on the smaller limbs of the tree tops to find food. 

Emu

Emu are an interesting type of bird because they do not fly! They are the second largest bird in the world. Emu’s are very quick and run up to 31 miles per hour! They can grow to be 6 feet tall! Emus enjoy eating plants, grasshoppers, cockroaches, and beetles. When a female Emy lays an egg, the male sits on it for 8 weeks until it hatches!

Emperor Penguin

The Emperor Penguins are the largest of the 19 penguin species, reaching a height of almost 4 feet tall and about 88 pounds. Emperor Penguins only live in Antarctica and there are over 500,000 Emperor Penguins that live there. Emperor Penguins live in groups called Colonies. Emperor Penguin Colonies can be so large that they can be seen in space! 

Ermine

The Ermine is a type of weasel. It lives in the cold regions of the United States, Canada, and Russia. Despite being rather small, they are fierce fighters and have been known to defeat animals larger than them. There are 21 different species of Ermine. The fur of the Ermine changes color depending on the season, during the winter they are almost pure white while they get darker in the summer months. 

Eurasian Lynx

The Eurasian Lynx lives in the forests of Russia, Europe, and Asia. The Eurasian Lynx prefers deer as a main food source but will also eat foxes and rabbits. Due to conservation efforts, the Eurasian Lynx has been removed from the endangered species list!  The Eurasian Lynx can jump up to 25 feet and can reach a running speed of 30 miles per hour.
