How To Make A Butterfly Out of Handprints
Select 2 different colored construction paper pieces including yellow and select at least 2 different colored acrylic paints for the butterfly drawing. Prepare the selected acrylic paint.
Use a thick paintbrush to apply the prepared acrylic paint to the palm of your hand. Make sure to cover the palm nicely and evenly. Take a piece of white cardstock paper and press the painted palm against the paper. Keep the palm on the paper for a few seconds and then remove your hand gently from the paper.
Similarly, create a hand-print with the other hand. Use a different colored acrylic paint to create another pair of hand-prints.
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Use scissors to cut out the handprint from the paper.
Take 2 different colored hand-print cutouts of opposite hands and attach them side by side, keeping the thumbs facing outwards.
Similarly, prepare the other 2 hand cutouts and attach them with the previous pair to create the wings of the butterfly.
Trace and cut out the butterfly body base and antenna patterns and the eyes from the template. The template includes 3 different sizes; you can select the size appropriate for your craft. Cut out some small round shapes from colored craft paper for the spots, to decorate the wings.
Attach the antenna cutouts on the top side of the head part and attach the eyes on the head part. Use a sharpie to draw the mouth-line of the butterfly.
Attach the butterfly body base along the middle of the hand-printed wings. Then attach the spot cutouts on the wings to complete the craft.
Fun Spring Activities For Kids…
Tips and Tricks
- Use Different Paint Colors: Switching out paint colors when painting your butterfly can really help add some personality to each butterfly. Let your kids get creative with their paint choice. Giving them the opportunity to choose can really help boost their ability to make decisions later in life.
- Add Magnets to the back: If you want the handprint to last a bit longer make it into a magnet for the fridge. Simply just glue a square magnet to the back and you are ready to hang this handprint craft right on the fridge.
- Use Cardstock: For more durability trade out the colored paper for cardstock. Cardstock is heavy and will last longer if you are looking for this craft to be given as a gift or kept as a keepsake for many years.
More Fun With Handprint Crafts
Handprint crafts are such a wonderful way of keeping memories of when your children were younger. Adding handprint crafts to a baby’s keepsake book is one of the best ways to save these fun and memorable handprint crafts.
You can also make other handprint craft animals and put popsicle sticks on them and have an animal puppet show with your children. Using their imagination with their artistic creativity is a wonderful way to increase their fine motor skills and creative thinking.
