New Year’s Eve with kids is a whole different kind of party. Instead of staying up too late and fighting over screens, I love giving them simple hands-on New Year’s Eve crafts and activities that keep their little hands busy and help them feel part of the celebration.
This New Year’s Countdown Clock craft has become one of our favorite traditions. Kids get to build their own clock, practice telling time, and then move the hands as you count down to the “new year” (even if that’s 8:00 p.m. at your house!).
It’s bright, playful, and doesn’t require any fancy supplies—just paper, scissors, glue, and our printable template.
Why You’ll Love This New Year’s Countdown Clock Craft
- Perfect for younger kids – Big simple shapes make it great for preschool and early elementary.
- Sneaks in learning – Kids practice numbers, counting by 5s, and basic telling time while they play.
- Helps manage the “Is it midnight yet?” questions – Set a kid-friendly countdown time and move the hands together each hour.
- Works at home or in the classroom – Use it as a center activity, a math lesson, or a party craft.

How to Make a New Year’s Countdown Clock with Kids

1. Print and Prep the Template
Print the clock template on white cardstock (for coloring or colored cardstock for an even easier project) so it’s sturdy enough for kids to play with. The template includes:
- Large clock circles
- Clock hands
- Party hat triangle
- Extra circles for decorating
Cut out each piece, or have older kids carefully cut their own for extra scissor practice.

2. Build the Clock Face
- Layer the circles.
Glue the smaller circle in the center of the larger circle to create the clock face with a colorful border. - Write the numbers.
Using a black marker, help your child write numbers 1–12 around the edge of the clock. This is a great time to talk about where the 12, 3, 6, and 9 go. - Attach the clock hands.
Stack the short hand (hour) and long hand (minute) on the center of the clock and secure them with a brad. Make sure the hands can still spin easily.

3. Add the Silly New Year’s Eyes
Cut out the large circles for the eyes and the smaller black circles for the pupils. Glue them near the top of the clock face so your clock looks wide-eyed and excited for the countdown. Kids love giving their clock a funny expression!

4. Make the Party Hat
- Cut the triangle.
Use the large triangle from the template as your party hat base. Trace it onto bright cardstock if you want a pop of color. - Decorate with circles.
Glue colorful circles all over the hat like confetti or use a marker to make a colorful hat. You can trim any pieces that hang over the edge for a clean look. - Attach the hat.
Glue the finished party hat behind the top of the clock so it looks like your clock is all dressed up for New Year’s Eve.

How to Use Your New Year’s Countdown Clock
Once your clock is ready, it’s time for the fun part, using it for your countdown!
Here are a few easy ideas:
- Hourly countdown activities
Choose a “start time” (like 6:00 p.m.). Every hour, move the hands to the next time and let kids open a small activity: a game, snack, dance party, or family challenge. - Early kid-friendly countdown
Decide on your “midnight” time—maybe 8:00 or 9:00—and move the hands together until it reaches 12. When it hits 12, shout “Happy New Year!” and celebrate with sparklers, confetti, or a balloon drop. - Practice telling time
Call out a time and have your child move the hands to match it. Or set the hands and ask, “What time is it?” It’s a hands-on way to reinforce what they’re learning in school. - Classroom New Year’s bulletin board
Make a whole class set of clocks and hang them up as a “Countdown to the New Year” display. Each student can decorate their hat differently.
Tips for Success with Younger Kids
- Pre-cut the small circles and clock hands if you’re working with preschoolers or a large group.
- Use cardstock instead of regular paper so the clock holds up to lots of spinning hands.
- If you don’t have brads, you can use a pipe cleaner through the center and twist it at the back to secure the hands.
- Let kids choose their own colors for the hat and circles so each clock feels unique.
