How to Make an Origami Snail

Follow these easy steps to make your snail craft:

Step 1:

Select lightweight craft paper for the origami part and thicker paper for the shell. Cut the paper into a 15 cm x 15 cm square.

Step 2:

Fold the square paper diagonally in half both ways, then unfold. Turn it over and fold vertically and horizontally, then unfold again.

Step 3:

Fold in two opposite corners so they meet in the center of the square.

Step 4:

Fold the shape in half along the longer side.

Step 5:

Fold it in half again, this time along the shorter side.

Step 6:

Slightly open one corner.

Step 7:

Flatten that side neatly to form a square shape.

Step 8:

Repeat the same folding and flattening on the other side.

Step 9:

Fold the open sides inward to line up along the middle crease.

Step 10:

Flip the paper over and do the same on the other side — fold both open sides toward the middle crease.

Step 11:

You should now have four flaps — two on each side. Fold one flap upward.

Step 12:

Flip it over to the opposite side.

Step 13:

Turn the paper around — there should be three flaps on one side. Flip the third flap to the other side.

Step 14:

Fold the narrow parts of the base up by about 30 degrees.

Step 15:

Unfold those folds.

Step 16:

Slightly open the right side of the snail base and tuck the right narrow part between the base layers.

Step 17:

Flatten it neatly so that side lines up with the bottom — this will form the back of your snail.

Step 18:

Fold up the left narrow part, pulling it slightly further upward.

Step 19:

Try to align this part with the left side of the base. It won’t be perfect, but that’s okay — just get close!

Step 20:

Fold the top end of the base down by about ½ cm.

Step 21:

Unfold that small fold.

Step 22:

Carefully pull out the top end, noticing the crease lines from before.

Step 23:

Refold neatly along the creases and flatten the top end again.

Step 24:

Cut a 1 cm slit between the layers of the snail’s head.

Step 25:

Fold back the slit’s rear part to make the snail’s antennae. Cut out a shell pattern and two small white circles for the eyes. Draw on eyes and shell details using Sharpies.

Step 26:

Glue the shell piece to the snail’s body — and your origami snail is complete!
