Learning shapes is so much more fun when there’s a silly little mouse involved! This Shape Mouse craft is an easy, low-prep craft that helps kids practice circles, triangles, rectangles, and ovals while they build an adorable mouse friend.
It’s perfect for preschool, kindergarten, or a fun afternoon at home when you want something hands-on that also sneaks in a little learning.

Why You’ll Love This Shape Mouse Craft
This activity is:
- Low prep – just print, color, cut, and glue.
- Great for fine motor skills – kids practice coloring, cutting on lines, and placing pieces.
- Shape Recognition – circles, triangles, rectangles, and an oval are all built into the mouse’s body.
- Flexible – use crayons, markers, or colored paper to customize your mouse.
You can use it during a shapes unit, along with a “If You Give a Mouse a Cookie” read-aloud, or as a simple centers activity.
What You Need
- Printed Shape Mouse Template
- Cardstock or printer paper
- Scissors
- Glue stick or school glue
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
- Optional: extra construction paper for a background or to trace the pieces
How to Make a Shape Mouse

1. Print the template
Print the Shape Mouse pages on cardstock so they’re easier for little hands to cut and glue. You can use plain white paper if that’s what you have on hand.

2. Color the shapes
Have kids color each shape before cutting:
- Oval – mouse body
- Triangle – mouse head
- Large circles – outer ears
- Small circles – inner ears and eyes
- Rectangles – arms, legs, and tail
This is a great time to talk about each shape as they color.

3. Cut out all the pieces
Carefully cut along the solid lines. Younger kids may need help with the oval and triangle; older kids can usually manage the whole project independently. Keep all the pieces in a small pile so nothing gets lost.

4. Build the mouse body
- Glue the oval vertically in the center of a fresh sheet of paper. This is the body.
- Add the triangle on top with the point facing down so it overlaps the oval slightly. This becomes the mouse’s head and nose.

5. Add the ears
- Glue one large circle to each side of the top of the triangle for ears.
- Layer the smaller pink circles inside for the inner ears.
6. Give your mouse eyes
Glue the white eye circles onto the triangle, then add the darker inner circles on top. You can also draw pupils with a marker or add googly eyes for extra fun.

7. Attach the arms and legs
Use the rectangles for arms and legs:
- Glue two rectangles to the sides of the body as arms.
- Glue two more at the bottom as legs and add the little “L” pieces as feet.
8. Don’t forget the Nose
Add a fun pom pom or pink circle for the nose if you choose.
9. Add details
Invite kids to draw:
- A smile and whiskers
- Background details like cheese, a hole in the wall, or shapes hiding around the mouse
Let everything dry, then hang your shape mice on the wall or bulletin board for a cute math-themed display.

Learning Ideas to Go with Your Shape Mouse
As you craft, you can:
- Ask kids to name each shape as they pick it up.
- Talk about how many sides each shape has.
- Sort the leftover pieces or scrap paper by shape.
- Challenge kids to find those same shapes around the room when they’re done (circle clock, rectangle book, triangle sign, etc.).
This turns a simple craft into a full mini-lesson on shapes.
