Being able to use a needle and thread to do some basic sewing is an essential life skill. This craft is the perfect opportunity to introduce your child to hand sewing! Since the needle is sharp and this will take some mastery of fine motor skills, this craft is best for ages 8 and up.

I know my kids are always asking if they can sew something, and attaching buttons to scraps of fabric only keeps them interested for so long. Making something they can display and take pride in is so much more fun! They’ll love taking this ornament out year after year to place on the tree.

  • Start your embroidery from the center of the snowflake pattern. Draw the needle from the backside of the base and draw it out through the center. You can work on the embroidery however you like, but it’s best to complete the center section and then work your way out to the edges.

  • After completing the 8-point star-like pattern of the center, work on the outer points. Stitch all the points one by one.

  • Without cutting off the thread, attach beads between the points and in the center of the snowflake pattern. Push the needle up from the back of the snowflake, through the bead, and then back down through the fabric.
  • You may want to repeat this step several times on the same bead to make sure it is secured well.
  • Once you’re done beading, draw the needle to the backside of the base and tie 2 tight knots with any adjacent stitch. Cut off extra thread.

  • Place the embroidered base on top of the plain base. Use a blanket stitch to sew the two pieces together. We chose white thread for this part, but you can use whatever color you like.

  • Take a small piece of ribbon and form a loop with it. Use fabric glue to attach the open ends of the ribbon to the back side of the felt snowflake to complete the craft.

Tips and Tricks

  • For a more secure and neat-looking ribbon loop, sew it to the back piece of the felt before sewing the two ornament pieces together. Place the ends of the loop on the inside of the two pieces of felt.
  • Make the ornament more 3-D by stuffing it with a small amount of poly-fil before finishing the stitches around the outside.
  •  If you don’t have embroidery thread, you can use regular sewing thread and sew over the pattern more than once.
  • To make this craft more kid-friendly, skip the needle and thread and go over the snowflake design with puff paint!

Materials

  • Felt fabrics
  • Needle
  • Matching threads
  • Cotton or scrap felt
  • Pencil – to trace the template
  • Fabric marker or gel pen
  • Scissors

Instructions

Print and cut out your template pieces. Select felt fabrics for the snowflake ornament. Trace the template patterns (round base and the snowflake embroidery pattern layout) on the selected felt fabrics and cut out the traced patterns. Use a pen or pencil to trace the snowflake pattern on your base cutouts.

Prepare needle with a thread of your choice. Start your embroidery from the center of the snowflake pattern. Draw the needle from the backside of the base and draw it out through the center.

You can work on the snowflake embroidery as you wish but it’s better to complete the center and then move towards the outer side of the snowflake pattern.

After completing the 8 point star-like pattern of the center, work on the outer points.

Stitch all the points one by one.

Without cutting off the thread, attach beads between the points and in the center of the snowflake pattern.

Once you’re done beading, draw the needle to the backside of the base and tie 2 tight knots with any adjacent stitch. Cut off extra thread.

Place the embroidered base on the top of the plain base. Work flat blanket stitches around the sides to join both base cutouts together.

You can stuff the snowflake ornament if you want to or you can keep flat.

Take a small piece of ribbon and form a loop with it. Attach the open ends of the ribbon loop on the backside of the felt snowflake pattern to complete your felt ornament.
