Insects are so neat! It’s crazy to think about all the cool things they can do. Bees make honey, crickets chirp when they’re cold, and most insects can camouflage themselves to hide from vicious predators.

Caterpillars amaze me the most though. Once they’re hatched from the egg, they eat and eat and eat! They get to take a two-week-long nap and wake up as a butterfly. Is anyone else wishing they could live life like a caterpillar?

My family adores The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. We love the illustrations and the creative ways they teach us about caterpillars. Each time we finish the book, we talk about how we wish we could eat all the same things the Hungry Caterpillar did.

Our Worm Pencil Holder and Butterfly Handcraft are awesome crafts to make if your little one loves caterpillars and other wiggly things as much as we do.

This Caterpillar Paper Puppet Craft is one of our favorites! These adorable little critters are a blast to make and a great toy to play with afterward.

What’s great about these puppets is that they are fully customizable. You can make your wiggly little Caterpillar Puppet with different colors, patterns, and even different shapes. Get creative with it!

We love making puppets in our house. They’re great for storytime. We just bring them out while we read our favorite book and use them to act out the story.

If you’re looking for more puppets, be sure to take a look at our Pirate Story Puppets. Our Lorax Papercraft Puppet would be perfect to bring out while reading The Lorax by Dr. Suess.

Not only are puppets great for storytelling, but they also help children work on their fine motor skills. As they trace, cut, and draw to make this craft, they are strengthening their fine motor abilities!

One of my favorite things about puppets is what happens after the story is over. I don’t know about your kids, but mine will make up their own stories afterward. It helps promote creativity and encourages them to use their imaginations!

Our Caterpillar Paper Puppet Template makes tracing and cutting out all the pieces a whole lot easier. Just download and print, then you’re good to go! Let’s get started!

Supplies

How to Make Caterpillar Paper Puppets

  • Pick out your construction paper. You’re going to want 2 or 3 shades of the same color. Here, we’re using 3 different shades of green. Use the template to trace the head and body parts on two shades. Trace the spots on the third shade. Trace the legs and antennas on your selected craft paper. Use the template to create the eyes.
  • Use your craft glue to attach the antennas to the head.
  • Glue on the eyes near the top of your caterpillar’s head. Use your sharpie to draw on the mouth.
  • Take one of the body parts and glue it to the head so they are slightly overlapping.
  • Attach the rest of the body parts one at a time.
  • Glue on one spot on each body part.
  • Use glue to attach the legs along the bottom side of your caterpillar.
  • Glue the popsicle stick to the back and you’ve got your own caterpillar paper puppets! Don’t forget to cut out the fruit and attach popsicle sticks to them so your caterpillar has something to eat.

Tips and Tricks

  • Different caterpillars have different patterns on their back. Design your own pattern with a marker.
  • Use pompoms to make your caterpillars fuzzy!
  • Add googly eyes for a silly, wiggly, little insect!
  • Skip the popsicle stick and use this to decorate your classroom! Make a bunch of caterpillars to inch around the room.
