I am a huge fan of churros! Every time I go to Disneyland or the fair my first stop is the churro line! I love how crispy they are on the outside and then yummy softness on the inside. If I am being honest I might eat these multiple times a day while there!

A while back I introduced you all to my delicious Air Fryer churro recipe that helps me fight my cravings when I am not at the fair or Disney and many of you asked for a deep fried churro recipe tutorial so I decided it was high time to give you an easy step by step guide to deep fried churros.

What is a Churro?

A churro is typically a fried pastry that is then rolled in cinnamon and sugar. These are made by squeezing choux pastry dough into hot oil that is then cooked to perfection. Commonly these are eaten alone or dipped in chocolate sauce.

What pastry are churros made from?

Churros are made from choux pastry.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup cold unsalted butter, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup All-Purpose Flour
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ cup granulated sugar + 2 tbsp cinnamon

How to Deep Fry Churros at Home

  • In a heavy bottom saucepan bring water, unsalted butter, sugar, and salt to a low boil. Enough to melt the butter.
  • Add in the flour and mix until a thick dough forms with a rubber spatula.
  • Add the dough to a mixing bowl and let cool for 5 mins.
  • Using a whisk attachment, add egg and vanilla and mix until a looser dough forms. It will resemble pate a choux.
  • Add your piping tip to the piping bag and cut off the opening at the end so that the dough will clear the tip.
  • Preheat vegetable oil in skillet.
  • Pipe 5-6-inch-long strips of dough into the hot oil using a knife to cut off the end. Fry on all sides for about 3-5 mins, until golden brown.
  • Drain on paper towels and toss in cinnamon sugar.

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • Check the oil with a candy thermometer to ensure it is the proper temperature for frying your churros.
  • Be sure to use a close star piping tip to make those ridges. This will make that crispy outside and prevent your churros from exploding.
  • Keep an eye on the dough as it is frying. Once you see that golden brown color remove them from the oil and set them on a paper towel for a moment before rolling in the cinnamon and sugar.
  • These are best enjoyed warm so be ready to share them as soon as you roll them in the cinnamon and sugar mixture!

Storage

In order for your churros to stay crispy, you will want to store them at room temperature. These will last up to 2 days, but taste best when enjoyed within 24 hours. If you place them in the fridge you can expect them to become soggy.

Reheating Churros

To reheat your churro you will want to wrap it in a paper towel and place it in the microwave for about 10-15 seconds. Cooking it too long will cause your churro to be soggy!

how to reheat churros in the air fryer

To reheat your churros using an air fryer all you have to do is preheat your air fryer to 375 degrees. Arrange your churros so they are not touching and heat for about 4-6 minutes.

Why are my churros not frying?

The number one cause of your churros not frying is not waiting for the oil to be hot enough. To ensure the oil is hot enough take a tiny piece of dough and drop it in the hot oil. If it begins to fry immediately then it is hot enough. The other cause of your churro not frying is that you are overcrowding the pan.

Why are my churros exploding?

If you have a case of the exploding churro, we have been there! This is caused by the outside cooking too much and too quickly creating a hard shell. This forces a lot of steam within the churro and the only place for it to go is to force your churro to explode. Be sure you make your churros with ridges to prevent this.
