Peppermint Hot Chocolate Recipe

2 glasses of peppermint hot chocolate with whipped cream and candy canes

I’ve been loving peppermint everything this year! Especially when it’s served with a healthy dose of chocolate. So naturally, I’ve been having lots of peppermint hot chocolate

But instead of going to my usual spot to grab a cup, I decided that I would try my hand at being a barista and make some right at home!

And it turns out that it’s so easy! All you really need is a great hot chocolate mix and some peppermint extract. Of course, I can’t resist adding some candy canes and maybe even some whipped cream too!

I have to warn you. You might never have regular hot cocoa again after trying this simple trick for peppermint hot chocolate!

How to Make this Peppermint Hot Chocolate Recipe

  • The first step in making peppermint hot chocolate is warming your milk. Add the milk to a microwave-safe mug and heat for 30 seconds at a time until it’s warmed to your desired temperature.
  • Add the hot chocolate mix and the peppermint extract and stir to combine. A mini whisk can be really helpful to use here to mix thoroughly!
  • That’s it! Now all you need to do is add your desired toppings. Add whipped cream, marshmallows, crushed candy canes, or whatever you like on top of your cup of cocoa!

Tips Tricks and FAQs

  • You can warm your milk with any method that you like, but the microwave tends to be the easiest. If you warm your milk on the stove, make sure that you keep an eye on it because you don’t want to let it boil!
  • Don’t forget a candy cane stirring stick! Is it even peppermint hot chocolate without a bit of candy cane? Using a candy cane to stir looks so beautiful and adds even more peppermint flavor.
  • If you have peppermint oil on hand, you can use it instead of peppermint extract but you’ll want to use much less! Peppermint oil is really concentrated so even just an eighth of a teaspoon in your cup would be way too much. Start with a few drops and add more as needed.

How can I make peppermint hot cocoa for my whole family?

Trying to make an extra-large batch? My kids always love making their own cup, so you may still want to make one recipe at a time. But if you want to avoid the mess and do it yourself, you can make a larger batch too.

When I make a larger batch, I pour the quantities I need of milk and hot chocolate mix into a saucepan and heat on low. Whisk the mixture until it’s warmed to the temperature you prefer and add the peppermint extract when you take it off the heat.

Now all you need to do is ladle the hot chocolate into your mugs and you’re all set!

Storage

Fridge

You can store hot chocolate in the fridge for about 4-5 days! It’s rare that I don’t finish a cup, but if I make a larger batch or want to save my cup for later I just pour it into an airtight container and pop it in the fridge.

Reheat it when you are ready and add some whipped cream and you’re good to go.
