Commonly Known Animals That Start With G
Gazelle
Gazelles are really cool animals that come from Asia and Africa. They like to live in the grassy areas and wide-open spaces of those countries. One of the special things about gazelles is how fast they can run and their unique horns. They can run as fast as 60 miles per hour, which is even faster than a car on the highway. Wow! They can also jump really high, up to 10 feet in the air. That’s like jumping over a tall basketball hoop!
But here’s some sad news. Gazelles are in danger of disappearing forever. People are hunting them so much that there are only around 500 left in the wild. We need to help protect them and make sure they have a safe place to live. Gazelles are amazing animals, and we want to make sure future generations get to see them too.
Galapagos Tortoise
The Galapagos Tortoise is a special tortoise that lives on the Galapagos Island. It’s famous for being really big and living a super long time. Can you believe that the oldest Galapagos Tortoise ever was more than 150 years old? That’s older than your great-grandparents!
Not only are they old, but they are also huge! The biggest Galapagos Tortoise ever measured was over 6 feet long and almost 900 pounds. That’s as tall as a grown-up and weighs more than a small car!
These amazing tortoises love to sleep a lot. They can sleep for 16 hours a day. That’s like sleeping through a whole school day! Because they move really slowly, they can actually go without eating or drinking for a whole year. They have a special way of storing water in their body, like a water tank, and they use it when they need it.
Gerbil
Gerbils are known for being great pets. They love a good cuddle, and in the wild will sleep in piles of other gerbils. Gerbils are underground dwellers and dig complex tunnel systems. They will only leave their tunnels to find food and water. Gerbils enjoy a good sand bath, removing debris from their fur. Gerbils enjoy playing fighting that looks like they are boxing each other. This lets them practice their self-defense.
Gecko
Geckos are part of a 1,500 species family that can be found worldwide, except Antarctica. Geckos come in all sizes and colors. The smallest gecko only measures half an inch and the largest is 14 inches long. Geckos have a lot of teeth, they replace their full sets of teeth every 3 months. They will keep growing teeth as long as they live. Geckos are able to stick to anything, except teflon. Geckos have the ability to detach their tails in case they get caught by a predator. The tail will grow back in a matter of weeks.
Goat
Did you know that Goats have rectangular pupils? They can not look up and down without moving their whole head because of this. Goats are very similar to dogs, they share the same life span and both can learn their names (you can call a goat by its name it will come back!). Goats get depressed if they do not live in a group of other goats or herd animals.
Giant Clam
The Giant Clam lives in the Indian Ocean, enjoying life on the reef flats. They have a symbiotic relationship with the algae that live around them. The algae are protected from grazing animals, and the Giant Clam eats the food produced by the algae. Because of its size, the Giant Clam will not move from its determined spot for the rest of its life. Due to overharvesting, the Giant Clam is on the endangered species list.
Goldfish
Goldfish have no stomachs, so they only eat small amounts and produce a lot of waste. The oldest Goldfish on record was 45 years old! Depending on their tank size, Goldfish can grow to be around a foot long. If you feel like a Goldfish is staring at you, it is. Goldfish have no eyelids and sleep with their eyes open. The first domesticated Goldfish was in Japan.
Golden Eagle
The Golden Eagle is the largest and fastest bird in North America. The Golden Eagle has the ability to swoop toward prey at 150 miles per hour! They mainly eat rabbits, squirrels, and other small mammals. Unlike other Eagles who eat other birds and fish, the Golden Eagle has not been affected by pesticides and the thinning of their eggs walls. The thinning of egg walls has caused diminished populations of new eagles, but the Golden Eagle.
Gopher
If you stand out on your lawn, or in a field, it is most likely there are gophers under your feet. Gophers live entirely underground in complex burrow systems they make themselves. In order to dig their burrows, Gophers have adapted in order to not get dirt in their mouths. Their lips are specially designed to not allow dirt in. Gophers are very smart and will learn from the trap it avoids, so if you are trying to outsmart a Gopher it will be difficult.
Goose
If you find a goose egg about to hatch, you may end up a surrogate parent. Baby geese will bond with the first moving thing it sees. Geese are very social birds and enjoy being around other geese and other birds. Mostly, they get along with everyone. Geese are only aggressive when they feel threatened or something gets too close to their eggs. Geese migrate to warmer climates when it gets too cold. They use landmarks, the sun, and stars as their GPS.
Gorilla
There are two different species of Gorillas: the Eastern and Western Gorillas. Gorillas are very family oriented and live in large groups, with up to 30 gorillas in the group. Groups of Gorillas that live together are called “troops”, each troop has a dominant male, the females whom he mates with, and their babies. Male Gorillas are very powerful and defend their family with their strength if necessary. Unfortunately, Gorillas are currently on the endangered species list.
Gopher Snake
The Gopher Snake got its name because they like to live in gopher burrows underground after they have eaten its previous resident. Gopher Snakes are mostly found in North and Central America. The Gopher Snake is nonvenomous but its bite really hurts! There are six different species of Gopher Snakes. A Gopher Snake can be identified by its cream color with spots on either side of its body, the larger spot is on the top of the body with descending spots down the sides.
Great White Shark
Great White Sharks can be found in every ocean in the world, but they prefer the cooler waters close to the coast. Great White Sharks live up to their name, they are the largest predatory fish in the world and grow to be half the length of a school bus! They are very fast swimmers as well and can reach speeds around 35 miles an hour. If you think brushing your teeth is a hassle, imagine if you were a Great White Shark with 7 rows of teeth!
Great Dane
Great Danes are just as their names suggest! They are the tallest dog in the world, standing at 32 inches at the shoulder and weighing 140 pounds. Despite their size, they are very gentle giants. They love their family and are very loyal. They were bred to be hunter dogs so they will follow any pleasing scent they find. Unfortunately, due to their larger size the Great Dane only lives to be around 10 years old.
Grey Seal
Grey Seals are one of the cutest seal species, but unfortunately, they are on the endangered species list. Due to being hunted for their skin, the Grey Seal is now protected by the government. Grey Seals can get very big! They can grow to be up to 10 feet long and weigh around 800 pounds! Even though they are very cute, the Grey Seals scientific name Halichoerus grypus, translates to “hooked-nosed pig of the sea”. Even though Grey Seals are wonderful swimmers, they are not very graceful on land. They have to move like caterpillars to get where they need to go.
Groundhog
The most famous Groundhog is Punxsutawney Phil, who is said to predict if spring is coming. Unfortunately, not all Groundhogs have this amazing ability to predict the seasons. Groundhogs and Gophers have similar characteristics but are different in some ways. Groundhogs, like Gophers, burrow underground and can be seen as pests by homeowners. Gophers are larger than Groundhogs. A Groundhog’s teeth are always growing! They grow ⅙ of an inch each week throughout their lives.

Galapagos Penguin
The Galapagos Penguin shares the same region as the Galapagos tortoise. They both live on an island off the coast of Ecuador. The Galapagos Penguin is the second smallest penguin and it is the only penguin species to live near the equator. Their body shape is different than other penguins, their bodies curve forward to shade their feet in the heat. Like its neighbor, the Galapagos Penguin is on the endangered species list. In 1983, the occurrence of El Nino temperatures wiped out all but 400 Galapagos Penguins.
Ghost Crab
The Ghost Crab is known for its creamy white color, but their name comes from their night hunting. The Ghost Crab can be found on any beach around the world, making them the most populous crabs. Ghost Crabs are known for their color and their eyes, which stick out from their head and have the ability to move 360 degrees. Ghost Crabs have the ability to change their color depending on the color of the sand they live in.
Gibbon
Gibbons are not part of the monkey family but are apes since they have no tails. Gibbons are tree dwellers who use their arms to swing from branch to branch. They are so good at swinging they can reach 34 miles per hour! To help their swinging, their arms are 5 feet wide while their hind legs are 1.5 times shorter. Gibbons are singers and prefer to communicate through song.
Giant Panda Bear
The Giant Panda Bear is distinctly known for its unique black and white fur. There are theories as to why Panda have black and white fur but there is no concrete evidence as to why they are colored this way. Bamboo is the primary food source for the Giant Panda and they can eat up to 100 pounds of bamboo a day! When a Giant Panda is born, they are hairless and pink and about the size of a stick of butter.
Great Blue Heron
The Great Blue Heron can be found in the wetland territories of North America. They are easily recognizable with their blue plumage and long beak. They use their long beak to grab fish from the waters they live in. In addition, they do eat small mammals and lizards. When it is time to lay their eggs, they make nests high up in the trees in nest colonies.
Great Egret
Great Egrets and Great Blue Herons share the same wetland territories of North America. Since they are very similar in size, they are often mistaken for each other. One way to distinguish between them is that Great Egrets have black legs.
Grizzly Bear
Grizzly Bears inhabit most of North America but are mostly found in Canada. The Grizzly Bear is huge, standing around 9 feet tall on its back legs, and weighing around 1,200 pounds! What is dangerous is their 4-inch claws which can dig into almost everything. Grizzly Bears are very hungry creatures and can eat around 90 pounds of food a day. In order to eat that much, they feed on caribou, fish, and even dead animals.
